What is an HS Code?
HS Code: An abbreviation for Harmonized System of Nomenclature and Coding for Goods. It is an international standard classification system for goods issued by the World Customs Organization (WCO). It unifies the names, descriptions, and codes of goods traded worldwide. The HS code consists of 8 digits: Each digit represents a different classification level.
Example : HS code 84712000 - Machines and equipment for isotope separation, and parts thereof, in the 2024 Import and Export Tariff Schedule, Part XVI, Chapter 84: Nuclear reactors, boilers, machinery and mechanical equipment; parts thereof.
The HS code system is applied globally: It helps to expedite, ensure safe, and efficient customs clearance of goods, while minimizing trade disputes. Import and export businesses are responsible for declaring the correct HS code in customs declarations.
