California Ports Witness Significant Growth in Container Volume in November 2023

The San Pedro Bay ports reported a spike in container volume last month, with the Port of Los Angeles (POLA) handling 763,262 TEUs, marking a 19% increase compared to the same period last year, while the Port of Long Beach (POLB) managed 731,033 TEUs, marking a 24.2% surge from November 2022.
"We are recapturing market share, online shopping is on the rise and retailers are keeping the shelves stocked to meet rising consumer demand for the holidays," stated POLB Executive Director Mario Cordero. He continued, "We remain optimistic as cargo returns to this critical gateway for Transpacific trade."
Imports at the LA port in November reached 384,619 TEUs, a 25% increase year-on-year, while exports totaled 111,755 TEUs, a 24% rise from the same period last year. Meanwhile, the total number of empty containers hit 266,888 TEUs, a 10% increase from the previous year.
At Long Beach, import containers soared by 37% to 355,339 TEUs, while exports dropped by 13% to 108,798 TEUs. Additionally, empty container throughput surged by 30.6% to 266,896 TEUs.
Gene Seroka, POLA Executive Director, noted, "Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales were strong, and the forecast for overall holiday sales is 3 to 4% above last year, another high mark."
Through November 2023, the Port of Los Angeles handled 7,887,162 TEUs, a decrease of 14% compared to the same period last year, while the Port of Long Beach processed 7,308,848 TEUs, down by 14.9%.
