Container shipping lines restored 30 sailings on the trans-Pacific (west coast) service for the third quarter
According to analyst Sea-Intelligence, global carriers reinstated sailings on the trans-Pacific (west coast) service in the third quarter because of optimism about peak season demand and the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19).
On the Asia-North America (West Coast) service, the carriers reinstated 30 sailings - which were canceled earlier - in the third quarter. Out of these 30 restored sailings, 22 were in THE Alliance.
"We see a similar picture on Asia-North Europe where of the 11 sailings that were ‘un-blanked’, nine were on THE Alliance services" said Alan Murphy, director of Sea-Intelligence.
And out of a total of 49 restored sailings across the Pacific and Asia-Europe, THE Alliance contributed 36. "This goes to show that THE Alliance blanked capacity too aggressively and have dialled it down keeping in line with the other alliances." observed Murphy.
"What we can see is that from week 29 (13 July) onwards, virtually no blank sailings are scheduled on the trade lane, bar a few in week 36, with the year-on-year capacity growth suggesting that from the carriers’ deployment considerations, coronavirus is no longer as big a challenge", he said.
"This can either be due to a demand pickup, or an expected pickup in the coming weeks."
Murphy added that, on the other hand, for the Asia-North Europe service, carriers appear to be moving on par with 2019 levels through the rollout of their current planned capacity, although there may be a capacity drop for the Golden Week (of China) as it gets closer to September - Firms usually announce Golden Week within 4 to 6 weeks.
