Container shipping profits and margins plunge in Q1
Container shipping industry profits plunged in Q1 2025, signaling a volatile period ahead despite some short-term support..webp)
According to John McCown's Blue Alpha Capital, the container shipping industry recorded a net profit of $9.9 billion in the first quarter of 2025. This represents a decline of 36.4%, or $5.7 billion, compared to the previous quarter (Q4 2024 was $15.6 billion).
The business results of 11 listed companies, accounting for 64.5% of the total market share, showed a net profit of $6.4 billion. This included results from the container business of Mitsui OSK Lines, NYK and K-Line - the three major shareholders of the Ocean Network Express (ONE) alliance.
This is the second consecutive quarter of declines in container industry profits. The peak in 2024 for the container shipping industry is in Q3, with net profits reaching $26.8 billion, as the market reacts to shipping lines diverting around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid Houthi attacks in the Red Sea, helping to absorb excess capacity from newbuilds entering the fleet.
Corresponding to the decline in profitability, analytics firm Alphaliner also recorded a decline in profit margins for the nine largest listed container lines. "The average operating margin for the leading container carriers fell to its lowest level in four quarters, despite the front loading of cargo by American shippers looking to get ahead of Chinese tariffs," Alphaliner said in its weekly report.
According to Alphaliner, the nine companies’ reported earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins averaged 18.1% in Q1 2025, compared to 25.8% in the previous quarter.
Looking ahead, McCown forecasts further declines in Q2 2025, with net income ranging between $5.0 billion and $6.6 billion. He notes that this is significantly lower than the $10.2 billion that container lines achieved in Q2 2024, when their results were boosted by diversions in the Red Sea.
“The balance of 2025 is certain to be among the most eventful periods ever for the container shipping industry. Buckle up as its likely to have lots of twists and turns,” McCown concludes.
