European Union's ports ban Russian ships
The European Commission (EC) announced that Russian ships and ships operated by Russia are prohibited from accessing European Union (EU) ports.

The European Commission (EC) has announced a ban on Russian ships and ships operated by Russia from accessing European Union (EU) ports.
The EC said there would be "certain exemptions" covering essential items, such as agricultural products and food, humanitarian aid and energy.
The EC added that it would propose a ban on road transport operators of Russia and Belarus. "This ban will drastically limit the options for the Russian industry to obtain key goods," the European Commission said.
The ban on Russian and Russian-operated ships from EU ports is one of the six pillars of a fifth package of sanctions aimed at Russia over Putin's attack on Ukraine.
"The four packages of sanctions have hit hard and limited the Kremlin's political and economic options. We are seeing tangible results. But clearly, in view of events, we need to increase our pressure further. Today, we are proposing to take our sanctions a step further. We will make them broader and sharper, so that they cut even deeper in the Russian economy" , said European Commission President von der Leyen.
The EC's fifth package of sanctions also includes a ban on coal imports from Russia worth 4 billion euros ($4.3 billion) a year, a full trading ban on four key Russian banks, orders further targeted export ban and new specific import ban worth €5.5 billion ($5.9 billion).
“We are working on additional sanctions, including on oil imports, and we are reflecting on some of the ideas presented by the Member States, such as taxes or specific payment channels such as an escrow account,” says von der Leyen.
