FedEx Announces 5.9% Rate and Surcharge Increase for 2026
FedEx has announced a planned 5.9% general rate increase for 2026, effective January 5, maintaining the same level of increase for the past two years and adding to cost pressures for shippers.

Express carrier FedEx has just announced its new rate increases for 2026, which are scheduled to take effect on January 5. The announcement comes as shippers are already grappling with shipping costs that are at elevated levels.
The FedEx rate hike is an annual ritual in the parcel delivery industry. The upcoming 5.9% general rate increase is similar to the hikes the company implemented in 2024 and 2025. Competitor UPS typically makes similar price adjustments each year, although as of Friday (Sept. 12), it had not yet announced its increases for 2026.
FedEx's January rate hike comes as shippers are struggling with rising delivery costs driven by surcharges and limited discounting activity. The TD Cowen/AFS Freight Index reported in July that ground per-package rates reached a record high in Q2 and are expected to remain elevated.
A Detailed Look at Surcharges
Although FedEx will be increasing a variety of surcharges, parcel analyst and founder of LPF Spend Management, Nate Skiver, pointed out on LinkedIn that the increases for additional handling and oversized shipping fees are much lower than in 2025.
As an example, during the previous annual rate hike, an additional handling surcharge based on weight for a Zone 2 shipment increased by $9 to $43.50. For 2026, this fee will only increase by $2.50 to $46.
However, even with less pronounced surcharge increases in this category, businesses that specialize in sending bulky packages via FedEx have endured rapidly rising rates in recent years. Experts suggest that limited competition for delivering large packages and the difficulties in efficiently transporting bulky items are key factors driving this trend.
