Global Container Market: Power Consolidates as Major Shipping Lines Increase Dominance
A new report reveals a growing concentration in the global container market, with 82.5% of market share now controlled by the major alliances and MSC. This dominance is squeezing the competitive landscape and putting pressure on smaller operators.

As reported by Container News, the combined market share of the major alliances and MSC has edged up to 82.5%, an increase from 82.1% four months prior, underscoring the continuous consolidation of power among the largest carriers.
Independent operator MSC remains the largest carrier by capacity, accounting for approximately 21% of global container volume. This figure represents an increase from the 20.6% share MSC held at the beginning of the year.
Among the three dominant alliances, the Gemini Cooperation, established by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, holds 21.3% of global capacity. This is a slight dip from the 21.6% share it held following the new VSA's (Vessel Sharing Agreement) launch in February.
The Ocean Alliance-comprising CMA CGM, COSCO, Evergreen Marine, and OOCL-has expanded its market share to 28.8% from 28.4%.
Meanwhile, the Premier Alliance-which includes Ocean Network Express (ONE), HMM, and Yang Ming-maintains a market share of 11.4%, down slightly from its previous 11.5%.
As a result, non-alliance carriers, such as Wan Hai Lines, ZIM, and Seaspan, now account for only 17.5% of the global market, down from 17.9%, signaling a further squeeze on smaller operators.
MSC's dominance, driven by the sheer size of its fleet of over 800 vessels, combined with VSAs like the Gemini Cooperation, reflects the top carriers' ability to achieve greater operational efficiencies, network optimization, and cost advantages through scale and collaboration.
This dominance, however, leaves very little room for competition for smaller carriers, particularly on the main East-West trade lanes.
Orderbook data indicates that the largest carriers intend to maintain and even strengthen their positions. MSC currently has 127 new vessels on order, while Ocean Alliance members have a combined 244 vessels under construction. These additions are set to boost capacity and modernize their fleets in the coming years.
Industry observers have raised concerns that this level of concentration could diminish competition, impact rate stability, and limit options for shippers in global trade. For exporters and importers, the tight control of key routes by a handful of carriers could translate to reduced negotiating power and higher costs.
Despite these concerns, the sheer scale and efficiency of the leading alliances continue to cement their dominance, enabling them to navigate volatile market conditions and maintain an outsized presence across international shipping networks.
