Hapag-Lloyd announces financial results for 2022 and forecast for 2023
Hapag-Lloyd has seen strong earnings growth in 2022 with an EBIT of $18.5 billion, but forecasts a huge drop in profits in fiscal 2023 with EBIT falling to between $2.1 and $4.3 billion .

Hapag-Lloyd posted strong growth in financial results in 2022, compared with the corresponding figure a year earlier, while the German carrier's container volumes remained stable.
According to the company's annual report, Hapag-Lloyd's earning before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) increased to $20.5 billion, and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) increased to $18.5 billion. USD and profit in 2022 reached 18 billion USD.
At the same time, Hapag-Lloyd's revenue increased to 36.4 billion USD, mainly thanks to the increase in average freight rates to 2,863 USD/TEU from 2,003 USD/TEU in 2021.
In addition, the Hamburg-based container shipping line has annual container volumes remaining at the same level as in 2021, reaching 11.8 million TEU from 11.9 million TEU.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd AG, commented: “Overall, we look back on a very successful 2022 with exceptionally strong results. This has enabled us to strengthen our financial resilience and asset structure once again. In addition, we have improved the quality of service for our customers and invested in terminals and infrastructure as well as in the efficiency of our fleet. However, costs – such as for fuel, charter vessels and container handling – have risen significantly.”
Due to the strong increase in the company's profits, equity has increased to 28 billion Euro and the equity ratio has increased to more than 70%. For these reasons, the management and supervisory board of Hapag-Lloyd AG have decided to propose to the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders the payment of a dividend of 63 Euro per share for the fiscal year 2022, respectively with a total payout of 11.1 billion euros.
Hapag-Lloyd forecasts profits will gradually return to normal in the current 2023 financial year. EBITDA is expected to be between USD 4.3 and USD 6.5 billion and EBIT will be between USD 2.1 and USD 4.3 billion.
Rolf Habben Jansen noted: “We have got the current financial year off to a decent start, but the economy has cooled and a significant decrease in earnings remains inevitable. So we will continue to act flexibly in the market and keep a close eye on our costs.”
