Hapag-Lloyd equips all containers with real-time tracking equipment
Hapag-Lloyd says the trackers will transmit real-time GPS location data, temperature information and report any unexpected bumps to the container, and the trackers are resistant to damage.

Hapag-Lloyd shipping line said standard containers in its 3 million teu fleet will be equipped with tracking technology, after successfully deployed for refrigerated containers since 2019.
The tracking devices will transmit real-time GPS location data, temperature information and report any unexpected bumps to the container. Hapag-Lloyd says these trackers are ATEX Zone 2 explosion-proof, and other sensors could be added in the future using Bluetooth.
TradeTech partner Nexxiot AG will supply equipment from the summer and ORBCOMM will provide equipment from the end of the year.
“Going forward, we will be able to provide all our customers with real-time track and trace data, giving them full visibility of any container movement worldwide. We will be able to detect delays earlier, inform impacted customers automatically and initiate counteractions at an early stage. We firmly believe that our real-time tracking approach will not only be beneficial for our customers but be a game changer for the entire container shipping industry,” Maximilian Rothkopf, COO of Hapag-Lloyd said.
Hapag-Lloyd LIVE is its surveillance technology, which will be rolled out to standard customers sometime in 2023. The service is already available to customers in a two-tier model, for allows access to data including Temperature Set Point, Actual Supply Air, Actual Retun Air, GPS Location, Track and Trace Events, Ambient Temperature, Power on/off and Relative Humidity.

This is what our customers now require and increasingly expect so they can manage their complex supply chains better.”
