Hapag-Lloyd Plans Investment in 22 New Vessels as Part of Fleet Renewal Strategy

Hapag-Lloyd is proceeding with a large-scale fleet renewal program, under which the German shipping giant will invest in approximately 22 new container vessels in the sub-5,000 TEU segment.
The Hamburg-based carrier stated that this move is part of a long-term strategy to modernize and decarbonize its fleet. The new units are expected to be a mix of owned vessels and long-term chartered vessels.
The company, led by Rolf Habben Jansen, describes this plan as a significant milestone on the path toward greater efficiency and the goal of achieving net-zero fleet operations by 2045.
Focus on Smaller Vessel Segments
This investment will target smaller vessel classes - a high-demand segment where Hapag-Lloyd aims to replace aging tonnage, reduce dependence on the charter market (which remains anchored at high rates), and cut operating costs through more fuel-efficient designs.
Market sources indicate the company has approached Chinese shipyards to build two series of vessels in the 3,100 TEU and 4,500 TEU ranges. Brokers suggest Hapag-Lloyd could split the order between Yantai Raffles and Taizhou Sanfu Shipyard. Indicative prices are reported to be around $70 million for the larger vessels and $60 million for the smaller ones.
If finalized, this move would boost Hapag-Lloyd's orderbook from 34 to as many as 56 vessels, including both owned and chartered newbuilds. As of the end of September, Hapag-Lloyd's fleet comprised 305 vessels with a total capacity of 2.5 million TEU, maintaining its position as the world's fifth-largest container carrier.
