HMM Invests KRW 4 Trillion in New LNG Dual-Fuel Vessels to Bolster Competitiveness
HMM has announced a KRW 4 trillion (approx. USD 2.9 billion) investment to construct 14 new vessels, including twelve 13,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships, as it moves to modernize its fleet and comply with the latest maritime decarbonization regulations.

The twelve 13,000 TEU container ships will be LNG dual-fuel ready, constructed by leading shipbuilders HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean. Amid tightening decarbonization regulations from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU), LNG is considered one of the most viable low-emission fuel options. According to Clarksons Research, nearly half of all newbuild orders last year utilized alternative fuels, with over 70% of those being LNG-powered.
By adding these LNG dual-fuel vessels to its growing portfolio - which already includes methanol and LNG - powered ships - HMM is reinforcing its leadership position in sustainable shipping. The two new VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carriers) will further strengthen and diversify the company's bulk fleet.
This significant order aligns perfectly with HMM's 2030 strategy, which aims to build a flexible, future-proof fleet capable of adapting to global market and regulatory changes.
