HMM Maintains Robust Profitability Despite Slump in Container Shipping Market

South Korea's leading shipping company, HMM, reported a net profit of KRW 304 billion (Korean Won) for the third quarter of 2025. This result demonstrates HMM's resilience as it operated within a challenging cargo transport market marked by low freight rates and subdued market demand.
Q3/2025 Business Results
For the quarter, HMM recorded revenues of KRW 2,706 billion and an operating profit of KRW 297 billion. Notably, the company successfully maintained an operating profit margin of 11% despite continuous market headwinds.
Although the year-on-year figures reflect a sharp decline - revenue was down 23.8% and net profit plunged 82.5% compared to Q3/2024 - HMM achieved significant growth compared to the preceding quarter. Revenue increased by 3.2% and operating profit rose by 27.5% compared to Q2/2025.
Cumulatively, for the first nine months of 2025, HMM reported revenues of KRW 8,184 billion, an operating profit of KRW 1,144 billion, and a net profit of KRW 1,515 billion.
Resilience Amid Plunging Freight Rates
HMM attributed its strong resilience to continuous cost optimization and effective operations, even as the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index (SCFI) averaged only 1,481 points in Q3, representing a steep 52% drop compared to the same period last year.
Amid a container shipping market that continues to face prolonged downward pressure on pricing, HMM's ability to maintain substantial operating profitability is a bright spot, reflecting stringent financial and operational management.
Q4 Outlook and Strategy
Looking ahead, HMM anticipates market conditions will continue to weaken in Q4 due to the traditional year-end cyclical slowdown and persistent uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariff policies.
To sustain profitability, the company plans to:
• Optimize vessel deployment.
• Focus on high-yield cargo segments, such as reefer (refrigerated) and out-of-gauge shipments.
• Research and leverage new trade routes.
