HMM Names First in Series of 13,000 TEU Container Ships
HMM has named the first container ship in a series of 12 new vessels with a capacity of 13,000 TEU.

The HMM Garnet was named at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in Ulsan, where six of the new vessels are being constructed. The remaining six ships are being built by Hanwha Ocean.
The ships will be LNG-ready and equipped with a smart ship solution to transmit operational data to HMM’s fleet control center, providing real-time operational visibility.
"We expect our new ships to give us strong environmental credentials and to provide us with the capacity and flexibility in the face of growing competition in the global market," said Kim Kyung Bae, President and CEO of HMM.
From next month, the HMM Garnet will be deployed on THE Alliance’s EC1 service connecting the ports of Kaohsiung, Xiamen, Yantian, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Yantian, New York, Norfolk, Charleston, Savannah, and Singapore.
The future of THE Alliance was thrown into doubt last week when Hapag-Lloyd announced it would be joining a new grouping called Gemini Cooperation with Maersk from February 2025.
These 12 new vessels will push HMM’s total capacity to over 1 million TEU.
