Jinjiang Shipping Invests $270 Million to Order Series of Bangkokmax Vessels
Jinjiang Shipping has announced plans to invest up to RMB 1.94 billion (approx. USD 270 million) to order up to eight Bangkokmax container vessels (1,800 TEU), aiming to bolster its premium service network and strategic connectivity between Northeast and Southeast Asia.
Shanghai-listed Jinjiang Shipping is making a strong move to expand its container fleet by announcing an investment plan of up to RMB 1.94 billion (equivalent to approximately USD 270 million) for a series of Bangkokmax newbuildings.
The carrier, controlled by the Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG), has officially approved a proposal to place a firm order for four 1,800 TEU container vessels, accompanied by options for an additional four vessels of the same design. The estimated budget for each vessel in the firm order is approximately USD 33.8 million, with options for the additional vessels exercisable within a specified period following the contract signing.
Strategy Focused on Southeast Asia
Commenting on the investment direction, Jinjiang stated that this capital expenditure aligns perfectly with its broader strategy and actual operational needs, with the new vessels targeted directly at Southeast Asia trade lanes. This additional tonnage is expected to robustly support route expansion in the region and refine the company's fleet capacity structure.
The carrier further emphasized that the new series will help solidify its premium routes, allowing Jinjiang to deploy its high-quality service model across more lanes in Southeast Asia.
Simultaneously, Jinjiang seeks to tighten the link between Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia, offering customers more routing options alongside improved operational efficiency and service levels.
Consolidating Position in the Intra-Asia Segment
According to data from Alphaliner, Jinjiang Shipping currently ranks 34th globally, operating a fleet of 52 vessels with a total capacity of approximately 59,400 TEU, of which 26 are owned vessels.
This investment in Bangkokmax vessels follows closely on the heels of a recent order for up to four 1,100 TEU newbuildings at Sumec Marine. This reaffirms the company's strategic focus on regional feeder services and intra-Asia trade.
If all options are exercised, this latest plan will mark one of Jinjiang's largest single newbuilding investments to date.
