Latin America: An Emerging Air Cargo Powerhouse on the Eve of 2026
No longer merely the world’s agricultural "barn," Latin America is transforming into a strategic growth engine for the global aviation industry. Trends in "nearsourcing," rising domestic consumption, and infrastructure investments are reshaping the regional logistics map heading into 2026..webp)
For years, Latin America was primarily viewed as a supplier - an export hub for perishables, electronic components, and automotive parts serving US and European markets. However, looking at the 2025 landscape, a clear reality has emerged: the region is no longer just a sourcing ground for the world. It is becoming one of the most strategically viable air cargo growth engines, fueled by nearshoring, rising consumer markets, and increased infrastructure investment.
Throughout three days at Transport Logistic Americas in Miami, a consistent message resonated: Latin America is entering a long-term boom phase, reshaping trade lanes and forcing carriers to rethink network designs for 2026 and beyond.
Tom Crabtree, Managing Director at Transport Research Advisory, offered a vivid analogy: “Trade is like water, it finds a way. And it’s finding its way into new markets across Latin America.”
From "Nearshoring" Myth to "Nearsourcing" Reality
Many speakers at the event pushed back against the notion of a "nearshoring boom" in the traditional sense. What is actually happening is far more specific.
Diego Rodriguez from Americas Market Intelligence put it bluntly: “Nearshoring hasn’t necessarily happened…the more accurate term would be nearsourcing.”
Instead of international manufacturers flooding Mexico with new factories, it is actually Mexican and Latin American companies that have scaled up production to meet US demand.
Mexico's labor cost advantage - about 25% cheaper than China - has heavily fueled this shift. Domestic firms have expanded capacity and modernized export operations to serve US consumer demand with faster lead times. This "local-first" sourcing model is spreading across Central America, the Dominican Republic, and Colombia, where manufacturers are filling supply chain gaps created by tariff and geopolitical volatility.
South America Rises as a Consumer Market
One of the most overlooked developments of the past year is the emergence of Latin American nations as high-consumption markets, not just export platforms. There is a massive consumer base here.
Direct flights from Asia to Latin America, once considered a niche, have become commonplace. Heavy freighters like 777Fs and 747Fs are busy touching down in São Paulo, Santiago, Bogotá, Quito, and secondary markets. The region's appetite for electronics, pharmaceuticals, fashion, and e-commerce has rewritten East-West demand patterns.
In 2026, Latin America's largest economies are expected to play a dual role: as manufacturing export hubs and expanded import destinations for global brands.
Infrastructure Challenges: The Race to Catch Up
However, growth alone is insufficient. The region must address its biggest structural bottlenecks: inland transport costs, digitalization gaps, and customs inefficiencies.
Robert Barcelo, Senior Business Development Manager at Port Everglades, summarized this reality at the event: “Nine times out of ten, the cost of processes is more expensive than the cost of freight.”
The region remains overly reliant on trucking, with limited rail connectivity outside Mexico. Customs processes remain paper-heavy. First-mile costs can exceed ocean freight costs.
Yet, investment is underway, albeit unevenly. The most ambitious project, Mexico’s Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, aims to connect Pacific and Gulf ports via rail while developing southern industrial parks. While not a Panama Canal replacement, it could significantly boost southern Mexico's integration into the US-Mexico supply chain.
Miami: The "Other" Trans-Atlantic Relationship
Speakers at the FDI panel emphasized: Miami is no longer just the gateway to Latin America, but is rapidly becoming a strategic anchor for the "other trans-Atlantic relationship" - the one between Latin America and Europe.
European manufacturers, particularly in Spain, Germany, and Italy, are viewing Latin America not just as a supplier but as an alternative market as the EU diversifies. Miami's role as the routing, warehousing, and financial hub of this triangle continues to be solidified.
2026 Outlook: A Region Asserting Its Position
Latin America's rise is not hype; it is a structural realignment of global production and consumption.
2026 is expected to bring:
• More direct Asia–Latin America freighter routes.
• Greater Mexican influence on nearshoring flows.
• New sourcing nodes in the Dominican Republic, Central America, and Northern Brazil.
• Investment in Southern Mexico and industrial corridors.
• Prioritization of digitalization and first-mile transparency.
• Expansion of Latin America – EU trade with Miami at the center.
A region once situated downstream of global manufacturing is becoming a focal point in its own right. For airlines, forwarders, and integrators, the opportunity is not just to serve Latin America, but to be strategically embedded in its rise.
