Maersk Bolsters Green Fleet: Orders 8 More 18,000 TEU LNG-Powered Vessels in China
Maersk continues its fleet rejuvenation strategy, ordering eight 18,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships from China's New Times Shipbuilding, with deliveries scheduled for 2028-2029.
According to multiple shipping broker reports, Maersk has returned to China's New Times Shipbuilding (NTS), placing a major order for eight 18,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships.
The contract, valued at approximately $193 million per vessel, also includes options for four additional ships. The delivery schedule for these vessels is expected to take place during 2028 and 2029.
Strengthening Partnership and 'Green' Strategy
This deal marks the latest phase in Maersk's large-scale fleet renewal campaign and further tightens the Danish carrier's partnership with the Jiangsu-based shipyard (NTS).
Over the next four years, Maersk is already scheduled to receive 26 LNG dual-fuel newbuilds from NTS, including both owned vessels and long-term chartered tonnage.
This pending delivery list includes:
• Ten (10) 16,800 TEU vessels (split evenly, 5 from SFL Corp and 5 from Seaspan).
• Six (6) 15,000 TEU Maersk-owned vessels.
• Ten (10) 8,700 TEU vessels from Capital Ship Management.
Once this latest 18,000 TEU series is delivered, Maersk will have taken delivery of more than 30 large LNG-powered vessels from the NTS shipyard alone.
