Maersk completes order for 20 dual-fuel container Vessels
Maersk has finalized an order for 20 dual-fuel container vessels, marking a major step forward in its fleet renewal strategy and commitment to reducing emissions, with a combined capacity of 300,000 TEU.

A.P. Moller – Maersk has finalized agreements with three shipyards for the construction of 20 new container vessels, each equipped with state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines. This important order covers a total capacity of 300,000 TEU (20-foot equivalent units) and marks a significant step forward in Maersk’s fleet renewal strategy, as announced in the August 2024 update.
Anda Cristescu, Head of Chartering & Newbuilding at Maersk, expressed her satisfaction with the agreements: “We are pleased to have signed agreements for 20 vessels and thereby completed the acquisition of 300,000 TEU capacity as announced in August. These orders are a part of our ongoing fleet renewal program and align with our commitment to decarbonization, as all the vessels will operate on lower emissions fuel.”
The new vessels will be equipped with dual-fuel propulsion systems running on liquefied natural gas and range in size from 9,000 to 17,000 TEU. This size diversity will enhance the operational flexibility of Maersk’s future network, allowing the company to better meet the needs of different deployments.
“Once phased in, they will replace existing capacity in our fleet,” added Cristescu.
The first vessel is scheduled to be delivered in 2028 and the last in 2030. In addition, in its August fleet update, the company announced plans to charter several methanol and LNG dual-fuel vessels with a total capacity of 500,000 TEU. Maersk has already concluded charter agreements with multiple suppliers, and these vessels will also be used to replace existing capacity in the fleet.
Maersk’s newbuilding orders:
- 20 dual-fuel vessels with a total capacity of 300,000 TEU.
- 2 9,000 TEU vessels ordered from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (China).
- 12 15,000 TEU vessels (6 from Hanwha Ocean, Korea and 6 from New Times Shipbuilding, China).
- 6 17,000 TEU vessels from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (China).
These investments affirm Maersk's commitment to sustainability and innovation in the maritime sector.
