Maersk Officially Restarts Red Sea Routing: A Structural Shift
Following successful trial voyages, shipping giant Maersk has confirmed that the MECL service will return to the Suez Canal route. This marks the first structural service change signaling an effort to normalize operations, commencing with the vessels Cornelia Maersk and Maersk Detroit in January.

Shipping giant Maersk has just confirmed it will implement the first structural transition to return the MECL service to the trans-Suez route, following observed improvements in stability within the Red Sea region.
This pivotal decision by A.P. Moller – Maersk (Maersk) comes on the heels of successful Suez transits by the Maersk Sebarok and Maersk Denver. The carrier has decided to execute the first structural change for a service returning to the trans-Suez routing.
This adjustment applies to the MECL service - a standalone string operated exclusively by Maersk, connecting the Middle East and India with the U.S. East Coast.
Specific Deployment Schedule
The voyages marking this return have been specifically scheduled:
• Westbound: The first vessel in this structural shift will be the Cornelia Maersk (voyage 603W), departing Jebel Ali on January 15.
• Eastbound: The Maersk Detroit (voyage 602E), departing North Charleston on January 10, will be the first vessel to utilize the trans-Suez route.
All subsequent voyages on this service will follow the Suez Canal route instead of diverting around the Cape of Good Hope.
Safety Priorities and Contingency Plans
Maersk stated that it will continue to monitor the security situation in the Middle East very closely. Any changes to the MECL service will remain contingent upon continued stability in the Red Sea region and the absence of any conflict escalation.
In an official statement, Maersk emphasized: “The safety of crew, assets, and customers’ cargo remains the highest priority. Maersk has contingency plans in place should the security situation deteriorate, which may necessitate reverting individual MECL sailings or the wider structural change of the MECL service back to the Cape of Good Hope route.”
Strategic Cooperation with the SCA
Maersk has long maintained its intention to resume trans-Suez routings when conditions permit, affirming the Suez Canal as a vital maritime corridor between East and West, and a key driver of global supply chains.
The company added that close collaboration with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) played a pivotal role in planning this return. Ongoing coordination aims to ensure that the structural shift of the MECL service, as well as any subsequent steps in a gradual return to trans-Suez, takes place in a manner that ensures safe operations and predictable service levels for customers.
