Maersk Prepares to Resume Red Sea Route: A Signal of 'Normalization' for the Asia-Europe Lifeline?
Amid improving security conditions, shipping giant Maersk is preparing a stepwise roadmap to return its fleet to the Red Sea and Suez Canal, with limited transits potentially commencing as early as the beginning of December.

World-leading ocean carrier Maersk has just signaled its intention to gradually resume operations through the Red Sea and Suez Canal, citing improvements in security conditions and progress in peace efforts within the region.
CEO Vincent Clerc stated that the company is preparing for a phased return to this critical East-West maritime corridor "as soon as conditions allow," with crew safety remaining the absolute top priority.
A Phased Plan and Cautious Approach
According to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), Maersk vessels are expected to begin limited transits starting in early December before transitioning to fully normal operations. However, a company spokesperson emphasized that Maersk has not yet committed to a specific date for the resumption.
The Danish carrier affirmed it will normalize passage through the Red Sea in phases, adjusting operations in alignment with constantly evolving security assessments.
Clerc noted that the latest diplomatic progress in Gaza and improved security around the Bab al-Mandab Strait have created favorable conditions for the restoration of safe maritime operations. These comments were delivered during a joint press conference in Egypt with SCA Chairman Osama Rabie, where the two parties also signed a new strategic partnership agreement.
Impact on Global Supply Chains
Maersk's reopening of the Red Sea route is projected to have widespread implications across the industry. Freight rates have remained elevated for months as carriers were forced to divert ships around the Cape of Good Hope (Africa) to avoid attacks in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden - an alternative that significantly increases transit times and costs for Asia-Europe service loops.
Previously, Maersk began diverting vessels in January 2024 after Houthi forces in Yemen targeted one of its container ships. The group carried out over 100 attacks across the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait throughout 2023 and 2024.
Recovery of the Suez Canal
On the Egyptian side, the SCA recently reported a 14.2% year-on-year increase in canal revenue for the period between July and October. The authority attributes this recovery to calmer conditions in the Red Sea following the ceasefire in Gaza and a subsequent increase in vessel transits.
