Maersk sues Evergreen and Shoei Kisen over Ever Given's blocking of the Suez Canal
Maersk filed a lawsuit against owner Shoei Kisen and shipping line Evergreen because the Ever Given vessel blocked the Suez Canal for six days in 2021, claiming compensation caused by the incident.

A.P. Moller-Maersk - A company of Denmark - has filed a lawsuit against the owner and operator of the container ship Ever Given that blocked the Suez Canal for six days in 2021, demanding compensation for delays caused by the incident.
“We can confirm that Maersk has filed a claim against Evergreen, the ship’s owner and the vessel’s technical manager at the Danish Maritime and Commercial High Court. The claim is related to the losses Maersk suffered during Ever Given’s blockage of the Suez Canal in March 2021," a spokesperson told Splash.
The 400-meter-long, 20,388-TEU Ever Given vessel ran aground in the Suez Canal on March 23, 2021, blocking a vital trade artery between Europe and Asia. Hundreds of ships lined up behind Ever Given, and some even took the unusual detour of having to go down around the Cape of Good Hope. Maersk did not say how many of its ships were delayed at the time.
Shoei Kisen of Japan owns Ever Given, chartered by Taiwanese shipping line Evergreen. The Copenhagen-based ship giant did not disclose the size of the claim. According to the local media in Denmark the total amount exceeded 40 million USD.
"We cannot confirm the mentioned amount," Maersk said.
