Maersk Trials Methanol-Ethanol Fuel Blend Onboard, Paving the Way for Shipping's Energy Future

The company's 2,100 TEU container vessel, Laura Maersk - which in 2023 became the world's first container ship to run on green methanol - is now serving as a testbed for an E10 fuel blend.
The E10 trial involves blending 10% ethanol with 90% methanol for use as the vessel's fuel.
The use of this blend is designed to assess the performance of ethanol in dual-fuel marine engines and determine its potential for use in Maersk's future fuel mix.
The company is also monitoring operational parameters such as ignition quality, combustion behavior, lubricity, and NOx emissions, as well as any other differences between standard methanol and the E10 blend.
According to Peter Normark Sørensen, Senior Manager of Fuel Transition at Maersk, the rationale behind the blend is to expand the availability and diversify the supply pool for its dual-fuel vessels.
The E10 fuel supplied to the vessel will be sufficient for approximately one to one-and-a-half months of operation. Afterward, the company will decide how to proceed with the next phase of testing.
Sørensen added that the Laura Maersk is ideal for small-scale trials, and the findings can then be applied to other dual-fuel vessels in the fleet.
