Many container shipping lines sharply increase profit per TEU in 2022
The combined EBIT figures for the 12 carriers that have announced their EBIT figures for the fiscal year 2022 are $95 billion, and adding these remaining carriers would raise this figure to an estimated $208 billion, according to Sea-Intelligence.
According to the latest report by Sea-Intelligence - a Danish maritime data analytics company - shipping lines have reported very positive financial results for 2022.
Up to this point, 12 of the largest container shipping lines have announced their financial results - except CMA CGM, COSCO, ONE, and PIL which do not publish EBIT; and MSC is privately held and does not disclose business results.
The combined EBIT figures for the 12 carriers that have announced their EBIT figures for the fiscal year 2022 are $95 billion, and adding these remaining carriers would raise this figure to an estimated $208 billion, according to the report by Sea-Intelligence.
However, Danish analysts note that there is weakness in the market as evidenced by a sharp drop in shipping volumes, while freight rates also appear to have slowed.

The current profit size of the carriers can be shown based on the EBIT/TEU ratio in the report.
Alan Murphy, CEO of Sea-Intelligence, points out that "While the major carriers have nearly doubled their EBIT/TEU, the smaller ones have only been able to increase by a relatively smaller margin". He added, "even going forward, EBIT/TEU will continue to be lower than in previous years."
Furthermore, we can see that HMM has reported the largest EBIT/TEU and is the only ocean carrier to date to achieve an EBIT of more than 2,000/TEU in 2022, followed by ZIM with an EBIT of 1,815/TEU. The remaining shipping lines are in the range of EBIT 1,200‑1,600/TEU.
