MSC’s secondhand acquisition spree hits 461 vessels
Latest data from Alphaliner reveals MSC has added three more vessels to its colossal fleet, bringing the total number of secondhand container ships acquired since 2020 to a "mind-blowing" 461.
The total count of secondhand boxships that Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has added to its fleet since embarking on an unprecedented buying campaign in August 2020 – primarily to replace chartering tonnage – has now reached a figure Alphaliner describes as “mind-blowing”: 461 vessels.
The world's largest container line, which recently surpassed the 7 million TEU capacity milestone, has continued to add three more secondhand vessels to its massive fleet.
Details of the Latest Deals
• The Atlantica Pioneer (3,651 TEU): Acquired from Oslo-based Atlantica Shipping for a reported price exceeding $45 million. The sale of this container vessel means the Norwegian owner no longer possesses any container ships.
• The Irenes Resolve (3,799 TEU): Purchased from Greece’s Tsakos Shipping & Trading for $23 million.
• The Rio Kobe (3,534 TEU): MSC also snapped up this Marlow-controlled vessel for $32 million.
Running Parallel to a Record Newbuild Program
Beyond the massive secondhand buying spree, MSC has also kept Asian shipyards extremely busy throughout the 2020s. According to Alphaliner data, the carrier's record orderbook currently stands at 123 vessels, with a total capacity exceeding 2.1 million TEU.
This move continues to cement MSC's absolute dominance on the global carrier rankings, leaving competitors far behind in terms of owned fleet scale.
