New record: 81 container ships waiting outside the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
The number of container ships in long queues at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach (LA/LB) surpassed 80 for the first time.

According to the Marine Exchange of Southern California, there are 81 container ships moored or floating in drift areas in San Pedro Bay waiting to dock in Los Angeles and Long Beach (LA/LB). About 30 container ships are docking at these two ports as of November 9.
The number of 81 container ships waiting to dock at two Southern California ports surpassed the record of 79 vessels waiting in line on October 21, Seatrade Maritime News reported.
The number of container ships waiting in line is growing despite Federal Government intervention to try to clear backlogs at key US gateway ports.
Last week, Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka revealed that many of the vessels anchored under 10,000 TEU are new to the port or from shipping lines that have recently joined the trans-Pacific trade or are chartered by retailers looking to overcome supply chain bottlenecks. According to Seroka, the ships had departed from ports in Asia to the Port of LA and had to wait weeks in San Pedro Bay for a place to dock.
The total number of ships of all types moored in San Pedro Bay as of November 9 is 168, one less than the backup record of 169 on October 21 of this year.
At the Container Shipping Market Outlook webinar at the end of last month, Drewry expected global supply chain disruptions to last until the end of 2022, instead of the previous forecast of the end of the second quarter 2022.
