New Shipping Alliance Launched to Tackle Ocean Plastic Pollution
A coalition of maritime industry leaders has officially launched the Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS), setting sights on reducing plastic and operational waste across the global maritime value chain.
A group of heavyweights in the shipping industry has officially initiated a new alliance aimed at slashing plastic pollution in the world's oceans. The Maritime Association for Clean Seas (MACS), founded by ocean impact organization Seven Clean Seas (SCS), brings together founding members including Berge Bulk, X-Press Feeders, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, and Britoil Offshore Services.
MACS's core objective is to minimize plastic and operational waste across the entire maritime value chain, focusing on practical measures that can yield measurable results.
Tom Peacock-Nazil, founder and chair of MACS, stated: “With MACS, we’re providing the maritime industry with the tools it needs to make measurable progress against plastic pollution. Not in isolation, but together.”
Action Strategy and 2026 Goals
This initiative is built upon the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Action Plan on Marine Plastic Litter, aiming to align industry efforts with global ocean protection goals. Although the shipping industry contributes only a small fraction of total ocean plastic, MACS members are focusing on areas where the sector can make the biggest difference, including preventing cargo loss, improving onboard waste management, and reducing single-use plastics.
For 2026, MACS will target three focal areas:
1. Sustainable procurement.
2. Onboard waste measurement and reduction.
3. Improving portside waste reception capabilities.
The alliance also leverages SCS’s experience in recovering ocean plastic and delivering social benefits to heavily polluted coastal regions.
Commitment from Industry Leaders
Michael Blanding, Head of Sustainability at Berge Bulk, affirmed: “Protecting the oceans is central to our business. Through MACS, we’re proud to help lead a united industry response that can achieve change at scale.”
Other founding members also emphasized the importance of collaboration. Francis Goh, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of X-Press Feeders, shared: “Joining MACS is a natural extension of our sustainability journey, which goes beyond reducing emissions to address waste and plastic challenges across the maritime ecosystem.”
The association will provide the maritime sector with a structured platform to share best practices, adopt innovations, and track progress toward cleaner seas, while actively inviting other maritime players to join.
Established in Singapore in 2019, Seven Clean Seas operates to prevent and recover ocean plastic while creating jobs and social impact in heavily polluted coastal areas. The organization aims to recover 100 million kg of plastic by 2030.
