ONE Henry Hudson Fire Incident: Cargo Discharge Complete, Vessel Departs Los Angeles for Repairs in Asia
Two months following the severe fire at the Port of Los Angeles, the ONE Henry Hudson (8,212 TEU) has concluded cargo discharge and is en route to Asia for repairs. Ocean Network Express (ONE) requires shippers to finalize General Average procedures for container release.
Two months after the serious fire incident occurred on board the ONE Henry Hudson (8,212 TEU capacity) while docked at Yusen Container Terminal within the Port of Los Angeles, the vessel is currently undertaking a cautious voyage across the Pacific to undergo repairs at an undisclosed shipyard in Asia.
Status Update on Cargo and General Average
In a customer advisory issued yesterday, Ocean Network Express (ONE) confirmed that discharge operations were officially completed on Monday.
All cargo is currently stowed at designated yard areas at the Yusen Terminal. Of particular note to forwarders and cargo owners: shippers are required to settle General Average (GA) contributions to take delivery of their containers. This is a mandatory procedure for cargo release following major maritime incidents to share financial risks among stakeholders.
Recap of the Fire Incident
According to information from the Los Angeles Fire Department, the fire originated below deck, likely stemming from an electrical source, before spreading through multiple sublevels.
The situation escalated when a mid-deck explosion disrupted the vessel's power supply, completely paralyzing lighting and crane operations. The severity of the blaze forced authorities to tow the vessel out to sea to an anchorage near the Angel’s Gate Lighthouse. This decision was made to allow firefighting and cooling operations to continue while minimizing safety risks to the port complex.
