Port of Long Beach Achieves Throughput of Over 8 Million TEUs in 2023
The Port of Long Beach recorded a total throughput of 8,018,668 TEUs in 2023, marking a 12.2% decrease compared to 2022.

At the end of 2023, the Port of Long Beach (POLB) achieved a total throughput of 8,018,668 TEUs, a decrease of 12.2% from the previous year. However, this figure surpassed the pre-pandemic levels reported in 2019.
The volume of imported goods at the California port fell by 12.7% to 3,804,356 TEUs, while the export volume decreased by 9.4% to 1,282,437 TEUs. Additionally, the movement of empty containers dropped by 12.7% to 2,931,876 TEUs.
The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) - located in the San Pedro Bay area alongside the Port of Long Beach - fared slightly better, with a throughput of 8,634,497 TEUs. However, the Port of Los Angeles also reported a similar decrease in throughput compared to its 2022 figures.
The Port of Long Beach continues to play a crucial role in Trans-Pacific trade, with commercial goods valued at $200 billion passing through the port annually and supporting 2.6 million jobs across the United States, including 575,000 jobs in Southern California.
