Port of Los Angeles achieves a new record for container handling volume in 2021
The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) has set a new record for container throughput, with handling capacity reaching 10.7 million TEUs in 2021, up 13% from the previous year's record.

The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) has set a new record for container throughput, with handling capacity reaching 10.7 million TEUs in 2021, up 13% from the previous year's record.
"In 2021, our marine terminal operators and workforce gave us the ability to move that cargo, from the ships to railcars or out the gates on trucks, and for that we are forever grateful to them," said port chief executive, Gene Seroka, as he announced the new record.
Additionally, Seroka welcomes the government investments being made in ports across the country, including $17 billion earmarked for the recently passed National Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, and $2.3 billion Newsom has earmarked for his California state budget for next year.
Going forward, Seroka has outlined port initiatives and priorities for 2022 and beyond, including improving supply chain efficiency through digitalisation, in partnership with the Biden Administration to enhance global competitiveness.
Seroka also emphasized the importance of workforce development through POLA's planned Goods Movement Training Campus, which will focus on upskilling workers to address changing needs of the industry fast.
The program received a boost this month with a three-year, $110 million commitment from California Governor Newsom in his proposed budget, according to a statement.
Furthermore, Seroka also revealed that an advanced port-based cyberattack prevention system co-developed with International Business Machines (IBM) is now fully operational, preventing potentially dangerous cyber incidents that could occur threaten or disrupt the flow of goods at the busiest port in the United States.
Another major focus of the port in California is reducing environmental impacts. POLA is currently testing 107 zero-emissions and 27 near-zero devices in the cargo handling, harbor and ocean liner operations, a number expected to grow to more than 200 equipment in the next 18 months.
Seroka also announced that in April, the US West Coast port will begin charging the Clean Truck Fund Rate, which is expected to increase by $130 million over the next three years. According to Geroka, the money will be used to finance zero-emission trucks and fuel infrastructure development.
