Port of Melbourne Unveils 2055 Strategy: A 30-Year Vision
The Port of Melbourne has officially released its 2055 Port Development Strategy (2055 PDS), outlining a 30-year roadmap to enhance capacity and efficiency while ensuring the flexibility needed to meet Victoria’s economic and population growth demands.

The Port of Melbourne has officially released a pivotal strategic document: the 2055 Port Development Strategy (2055 PDS). This document outlines high-level plans and approaches to develop the port's capacity and efficiency over the next 30 years, providing a planning framework capable of adapting and responding flexibly to changing needs over time.
Regulatory Framework and Long-Term Vision
The 2055 PDS maps out key projects that will improve port capacity and meet the needs of a growing Victoria.
Under the Port Management Act 1995, all ports in Victoria are required to have a PDS and must review and update it every five years. This process ensures port planning remains aligned with reality and macroeconomic forecasts.
Growth in Tandem with Population
Highlighting the driving force behind the strategy, Saul Cannon, CEO of the Port of Melbourne, affirmed that as the population increases, the port’s capacity must grow too, and this means continuing to engage with the stakeholders about the port’s future growth and development.
Balancing Stakeholder Interests
Shaped through extensive consultation and engagement with government, industry, and community stakeholders, the 2055 PDS strives to balance diverse perspectives on how the port should develop.
