Port of Oakland Expects to Return to Pre-Pandemic Volumes
The Port of Oakland expects to restore container traffic to pre-pandemic levels with strong growth in both imports and exports, especially agricultural exports.
The Port of Oakland saw a sharp increase in import container volumes in November, marking the 13th consecutive month of growth at the Northern California gateway.
Total import container volumes in November were up 13.1% compared to the same month in 2023. The port handled 80,580 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), compared to 71,258 TEUs in the same month last year.
“We are optimistic that strong container volume will continue through the end of the year,” said Carolyn Almquist, the port’s manager of business development and international marketing. “We expect to be on track to return to our pre-pandemic baseline cargo numbers. Our total inbound and outbound volume is up, and agricultural exports are boosting our outbound cargo business.”
According to port data, the total container volume in 2019 reached 2,500,461 TEUs.
In November, the volume of fully loaded export containers increased by 8.5% to 66,619 TEUs, compared to 61,390 TEUs in the same period in 2023.
The total volume of goods since the beginning of the year has increased by 10% compared to the same period last year.
The volume of empty imported containers decreased by 14.8% to 12,028 TEUs in November 2024, compared to 14,118 TEUs in the same period last year. In contrast, the volume of empty exported containers increased by 14.7% to 22,495 TEUs, compared to 19,613 TEUs in the same period last year.
