Cargo throughput at the port of Rotterdam increased 15% in the third quarter year-on-year as international trade continued to recover from the COVID-19 slump, Europe's largest seaport said on Tuesday.
Cargo volumes to and from Rotterdam were nearly 9% higher in the first nine months of the year, with strong growth in most segments, the port said.
"These figures show that the economy is continuing its upward path. Factories, businesses and logistics are operating flat out again to meet increased demand," the port's Chief Executive Allard Castelein said.
The port said strong consumer spending has pushed containerized cargo volume back to pre-pandemic levels, while freight rates surged.
As a result, the number of containers arriving in Rotterdam grew faster than the total amount of goods transported, as the transport of heavy and low-value goods declined.
The economic recovery has also boosted demand for bulk commodities such as iron ore, which is used to make steel, crude oil and oil products.
Coal shipments almost doubled in the first nine months of the year as wind and gas power supplies were barely enough to meet Europe's growing energy needs.
