Rare Surge: Port of New York and New Jersey Leads U.S. Port Volume
The Port of New York and New Jersey unexpectedly took the top spot among U.S. port volumes in May, as West Coast ports slumped amid tariff concerns.

The Port of New York and New Jersey, which has traditionally held the third spot among U.S. container gateways, rose to the top spot in May.
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the East Coast port handled 774,698 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in May. That was down 2% from the same month last year, but up 20% from May 2019, before the pandemic.
The port authority said year-over-year comparisons are difficult because last year’s volume spiked due to the volume of cargo diverted here after the Key Bridge collapse, which forced the Port of Baltimore to close.
From January through May, the port handled 3,729,611 TEUs, up 6.5% from the same period last year and 22.6% higher than in 2019.
In May, tariff concerns hampered container flows at the busiest gateways, with the Port of Los Angeles seeing a 5% year-over-year decline in volume to 716,619 TEUs.
Meanwhile, the Port of Long Beach handled 639,160 TEUs, down 8.2% from the same period last year.
