Shanghai may be locked down again due to the Covid outbreak
A new Covid-19 outbreak in Shanghai just eight days after returning to normal after two months of lockdown has raised concerns about a slow recovery in the world's busiest container port.

People in 14 of Shanghai's 16 districts have been ordered to test for Covid-19 over the weekend, after 11 cases were detected on June 9. Residents will be restricted from traveling for two days and The inspection is expected to take 12 days.
Linerlytica analyst Tan Hua Joo told Container News that for shipping, the situation may not be as dire. "Clearly, it’s a setback, but the impact was mitigated in the last round as cargoes were able to divert to Ningbo port," he noted.
Calls to Maersk Line's Shanghai office were returned that the company's operations were still as announced on June 1, although the Danish giant is minimizing office work and continuing to continue to let most employees work from home.
Maersk said that trucking is still operating in China's main ports and neighboring cities for drivers who have tested negative for Covid-19, adding that services such as gradually improved after the previous outbreak was brought under control.
Warehouses in Shanghai returned to normal operations on June 1, and Maersk employees say nothing has changed. However, those driving into the depot must have tested negative for Covid-19 in the previous 24 hours.
Cargo will not be accepted if the driver has been to a medium-high risk area in the past 14 days.
A spokesperson for Ocean Network Express (ONE) told Container News that the company has no restrictions on receiving container shipments to and from Shanghai.
Even as many countries now consider Covid-19 to be endemic, China still maintains a "Zero-Covid-19" stance.
On June 10, Yang Ming shipping line said that several crew members on board the 4,662 TEU YM Essence vessel, serving the Asia-US East Coast route, have tested positive for Covid- 19 while en route from Kaohsiung to the port of Yantian, southern China.
The Taiwanese shipping company said, “The affected crews were immediately isolated and necessary measures were taken with crew change in Kaohsiung. The vessel has completed cleaning and sanitisation.”
The YM Essence arrived and docked in Yantian on June 7 and departed on June 9, scheduled to arrive in Savannah on June 25.
