Shanghai Port Container Throughput Surpasses 50 Million TEUs
Shanghai Container Port reaches historic milestone, surpassing 50 million TEUs for the first time, continuing to affirm its global leadership position with its extensive connectivity network and impressive growth rate.

Shanghai Port, the world's busiest container port, has marked a historic milestone by surpassing 50 million TEUs for the first time.
World Leader for 14 Consecutive Years
Shanghai has maintained its title as the world's leading container port for the past 14 years, surpassing Singapore Port, which came in second. The port began container operations four decades ago, in 1978, with an throughput of 7,951 TEUs. Last year, the total container throughput of the port reached 49.16 million TEUs.
Forecast of 50 million TEUs achieved
Alphaliner analysts predicted in August this year that Shanghai would surpass the 50 million TEU mark thanks to a 7.5% growth in the first half of the year. This growth rate continued to increase in the second half of the year, driven by import demand from the US.
Extensive international connectivity
The Port of Shanghai currently has nearly 350 international shipping routes, connecting more than 700 ports in more than 200 countries and regions. In addition, the port cooperates with 22 ports in Chinese provinces and cities along the Yangtze River, including 16 ports in the Yangtze River Delta region.
