Suez Canal Welcomes Back 'Megaships': Signs of Recovery from CMA CGM and Maersk
The Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has officially announced a new recovery phase with the return of major shipping lines, marked by the resumption of canal transits by the mega-vessel CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE and Maersk vessels.
Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), has officially announced the commencement of a new phase characterized by the return of container vessels from major shipping lines to the Suez Canal route.
Marking this milestone, two mammoth container ships performed transits through the canal: the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE – one of the world's largest container ships – traveled in the Northbound convoy, while the CMA CGM ADONIS traveled in the Southbound convoy. Together, the two vessels transported a total of 154,000 tons of cargo. This development follows the decision by French shipping giant CMA CGM to fully return to the route.
Results of Marketing Efforts and Dialogue
Mr. Rabie attributed the return of these major carriers to the concerted marketing efforts of the Suez Canal Authority. These initiatives contributed to CMA CGM's announcement of a full fleet return, as well as kickstarting the gradual resumption of transits by Maersk vessels.
The SCA Chairman emphasized that these developments will have a positive impact on the shipping industry, encouraging other shipping lines to adjust their schedules and resume operations via the Suez Canal.
Mr. Rabie also highlighted expectations that traffic through the canal will steadily improve, reaching normal levels by the second half of next year.
Technical Specs of the Returning "Megaships"
CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE: This LNG-powered vessel led the Northbound convoy on its voyage from Morocco to Malaysia. As one of the largest ships in the world, it measures 400 meters in length and 62 meters in width (beam), with a gross tonnage of 231,000 tons and a carrying capacity of up to 23,000 TEU.
MAERSK SEBAROK: Meanwhile, the container ship MAERSK SEBAROK transited in the Southbound convoy, continuing its journey through the Bab El-Mandeb Strait from the Port of Salalah (Oman) to the United States. This is the first Maersk vessel to transit the Suez Canal following the strategic understanding between the two parties. The vessel measures 318 meters in length, 40 meters in width, has a draft of 14 meters, and was carrying a total of 82,000 tons of cargo.
