The Trump administration has issued a decision to postpone significant tariff hikes on imported furniture, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom cabinets for a one-year period. Simultaneously, it has significantly reduced proposed anti-dumping duties on Italian pasta.
This decision underscores the economic and political trade-offs facing U.S. trade policy, particularly against a backdrop of continued high reliance on imports and persistent pressure on consumer prices.
Furniture Tariff Hike Postponed: A "Sigh of Relief" for Supply Chains from Vietnam and China
According to a statement signed this week, higher tariffs on furniture - originally scheduled to take effect on January 1 - will now be deferred until at least 2027.
The executive order maintains the current 25% tariff rate on certain imported upholstered wooden furniture, kitchen cabinets, and bathroom vanities, rather than allowing rates to escalate to 30% for furniture and 50% for cabinets and vanities as previously planned.
The White House stated that this delay reflects productive negotiations with trading partners and ongoing discussions regarding trade and national security concerns related to wood products.
Had the higher tariffs been implemented, they would have severely impacted imports from major furniture suppliers such as China and Vietnam, while risking further inflation of consumer prices for household goods.
According to industry publication Furniture Today, the U.S. imported approximately $25.5 billion in furniture in 2024, an increase from 2023 levels.
