Each carrier will deploy one 1,200 TEU vessel for the CV6 service, which is expected to depart from Hong Kong on March 6, 2020, calling at Nansha and Shekou in China, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, as well as Bangkok and Laem. Wan Hai President Tommy Hsieh said that amid the US-China trade tensions, manufacturers have shifted some output from China to Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam. As a result, it expects revenue to increase by adding more services to the region.
In 2018, Wan Hai's container shipping volume from Vietnam grew more than other countries as this Southeast Asian nation became the second largest source of US imports in Asia. This growth has also shown Wan Hai to start two direct services from Vietnam to the US West Coast.
The company has eight 3,036-TEU ships with orders at Japan Marine United and dozens of 2,038-TEU ships with orders at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipbuilding Company. The new ships will be delivered from October 2020 to January 2021 and Hsieh said that Wan Hai is confident that the new ships will have enough cargo from Southeast Asia.
In the first three quarters of 2019, Wan Hai's net profit increased by 185% compared to a year ago, to 2.39 billion Taiwan dollars (approximately 77 million US dollars). Wan Hai said profit for the whole year is set to reach a four-year high.
Wan Hai is primarily an Asian inland carrier, with 70% of its revenue coming from intra-Asia services, of which its market share is about 15%. Wan Hai currently operates 89 vessels with a total capacity of 255,300 TEUs, including 66 owned vessels. Interasia operates 12 vessels with a combined capacity of 26,385 TEUs, including four owned vessels.
