Wan Hai Lines Updates on WAN HAI 503 Cargo Discharge Operations

Wan Hai Lines has issued its latest update regarding ongoing salvage operations for the container vessel WAN HAI 503. Cargo discharge activities continue under the strict supervision of specialized expert teams.
Current Status: Focus on Key Cargo Holds
According to the carrier, distressed cargo and debris are currently being removed from cargo holds 3, 4, and 5. Meanwhile, cleaning operations in cargo hold 1 have been completed, with the removal of final cargo remnants still in progress.
Parallel to the cargo discharge, the removal of firefighting (FiFi) water from the holds is being expedited. To date, approximately 11,440 tons of water have been pumped out.
However, Wan Hai Lines noted that this operation is becoming increasingly technically challenging. Cargo residue is clogging pumps, pipelines, and hatch covers, requiring the salvage team to dedicate additional time to troubleshooting and clearance.
Discharge Progress (Updated as of December 21, 2025)
Given the severe damage to the remaining containers on board, identifying individual units during the discharge process has become increasingly difficult. Consequently, the figures released below are estimates:
• Containers successfully discharged: 1,684
• Containers remaining on board: 38
Wan Hai Lines stated it continues to coordinate closely with on-site experts to resolve operational challenges and accelerate the discharge process, while strictly maintaining safety standards.
Concluding the advisory, the carrier expressed its appreciation to all authorities, partners, and professional teams for their continuous support and cooperation throughout this recovery effort.
