Weekly US rail traffic up slightly from 2024
US rail traffic increased 1.5% in the week ending February 15, 2025, driven by strong intermodal growth, despite a slight decline in freight cars.

The Association of American Railroads (AAR) on Thursday announced that total US rail traffic for the week ending February 15 was 480,740 cars and intermodal units, up 1.5% from the same period in 2024.
Total freight cars were 209,216, down 4.8% year over year, while intermodal traffic (containers and trailers) was 271,524, up 7%.
Of the 10 rail freight groups, only petroleum and petroleum products recorded an increase compared to the same period last year, up 1,501 cars to 10,948 cars. Cargo groups with a decrease in carload volume compared to 2024 include:
- Coal, down 4,472 cars to 54,447 cars
- Metal ores and metals, down 2,130 cars to 17,270 cars
- Chemicals, down 1,655 cars to 32,246 cars
In the first seven weeks of 2025, U.S. railroads recorded a total carload of 1,453,273 cars, down 0.7% year-over-year, while intermodal traffic reached 1,885,295 units, up 9.3%. Combined traffic reached 3,338,568 cars and intermodal units, up 4.7%.
Across North America, which includes the United States, Canada, and Mexico, total rail traffic for the week was 311,694 cars, down 5.9%, and 349,663 intermodal units, up 3.5% year-over-year. Combined traffic was 661,357 cars and intermodal units, down 1.2%.
In the first seven weeks of 2025, total North American rail traffic was 4,584,752 cars and intermodal units, up 3.6% from 2024.
Country-by-Country Breakdowns:
- Canada: For the week, rail traffic was 87,034 cars, down 6.3%, and 65,628 intermodal units, down 7.1% year-over-year. Total year-to-date 2025 traffic reached 1,091,660 wagons, containers and trailers, up 2%.
- Mexico: For the week, the total number of wagons reached 15,444, down 17.3%, and 12,511 intermodal units, down 7.1%. Total year-to-date 2025 traffic reached 154,524 wagons, containers and trailers, down 8.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
