ZIM introduces AI-based software to detect false goods
As explained, the new ZIMGuard system scans the shipper's cargo declarations at an early stage and marks cases where goods may be misreported.

Specifically, the artificial intelligence (AI) mining system, which includes natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning capabilities, to analyze documents and alert miners to omissions, concealing or misrepresenting dangerous goods - in real time.
Misrepresentation of dangerous goods is the cause of major marine incidents, causing loss of life and serious damage. Last year, many shipping lines announced the introduction of additional fees as a partial solution to this recurring problem.
According to ZIM, the ZIMGuard system is already in use at major ports in China, the US and Israel, and is expected to be deployed on all ZIM services by the end of 2020.
“Since launching ZIMGuard, we were alerted to dozens of cases of misdeclared cargo. In view of ZIMGuard’s potential contribution to the safety of the global supply chain, ZIM is willing to commercially offer licensing this system to parties who may be interested in utilizing it”, said Eli Glickman, President & ZIM CEO, said.
“Coping with misdeclarations of hazardous cargo, which can create a serious risk, is challenging. The new system has proven to be effective and on target. It enables us to identify, investigate and clarify any issue prior to loading, ensuring the safety of the crew and ship, and the safety of the supply chain in general”, Note Zadok Radecker, ZIM Global Special & Dangerous Goods Division Manager.
According to the Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE’s (AGCS) Safety & Shipping Review 2020, misstated cargo is believed to be the main cause of ship fires in 2019. There are nearly 200 ship fires reported. report in the past year, up 13%, for a total of five losses in 2019, Allianz said.
It is therefore of vital importance to take steps to resolve this issue as the problem will only get worse as the ships get bigger and the range of goods transported increases.
