Hormuz Tensions Escalate: Commercial Vessels Hit by Missiles as U.S.–Iran Talks Stall

Tensions in the Middle East have intensified further as multiple commercial ships came under attack while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. According to Axios, citing two U.S. officials, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched at least two missiles at commercial vessels navigating the strategic waterway on Monday evening.
Commercial Vessels Sustain Damage Following Attacks
A U.S. official said that two commercial vessels suffered significant damage, although no casualties have been reported so far.
In a separate incident, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported early Tuesday that an oil tanker caught fire after being struck by an unidentified airborne object east of Limah, Oman.
According to UKMTO, the tanker was hit on its port side while sailing southbound approximately 8 nautical miles (15 km) east of Limah. No injuries or significant environmental impacts have been reported.
Reuters noted that it has not been able to independently verify the information published by Axios, nor confirm whether the tanker referenced by UKMTO was among the vessels reportedly targeted. Meanwhile, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has yet to issue an official statement.
Growing Risks to the Global Energy Supply Chain
The latest attacks have further heightened concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic maritime chokepoint between Iran and Oman through which approximately 20% of the world's oil consumption passes.
Commercial vessels continue to face security threats as tensions among the United States, Israel, and Iran persist, despite a temporary agreement previously reached that included provisions guaranteeing freedom of navigation.
Indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran concluded last week without any meaningful progress toward a long-term peace agreement, although both sides continue to observe a 60-day ceasefire intended to provide space for diplomatic efforts.
Commenting on the situation, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States would either reach an agreement with Iran or "finish the job," a remark widely interpreted as reaffirming Washington's willingness to resort to military action should diplomacy fail.
Iran Issues Stronger Warnings to Commercial Shipping
Tensions on the ground continued to escalate after The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) released an audio recording reportedly capturing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) broadcasting warnings over maritime radio to vessels operating in the area over the weekend: "our missiles and drones are ready to fire at you."
According to the WSJ, one of the vessels believed to have been struck was Al Rekayyat, an LNG carrier owned and managed by Nakilat (Qatar Gas Transport Company Ltd.), one of the world's largest operators of liquefied natural gas carriers.
Sources indicated that the vessel was hit on its port side just above the engine room.
Another recording cited by the WSJ captured a distress report transmitted from the vessel after the attack: "Engine room fire and full of smoke. Unable to assess further damage. All crew are safe and mustered on the starboard side."
At the time of the incident, Al Rekayyat was navigating near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf of Oman.
As of now, Nakilat, QatarEnergy, and Qatar's International Media Office have not issued official comments, as requests for statements were submitted outside normal business hours.
Markets Continue to Closely Monitor Developments
The latest developments in the Strait of Hormuz are prompting investors, energy companies, and the global shipping industry to closely monitor the progress of negotiations between the United States and Iran.
As Hormuz remains one of the world's most critical maritime corridors for crude oil exports from the Gulf, any further military escalation in the region could have immediate implications for global energy supply chains, ocean freight costs, and sentiment across international commodity markets.
