Maersk Significantly Increases Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) on Indian Subcontinent–Latin America Trade

Maersk has introduced revised Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) levels for cargo moving from the Indian Subcontinent to the West Coast of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America. Depending on the origin and container type, the new surcharge will range from US$2,650 to US$4,550 per container.

Scope of Application

According to Maersk, the revised ECS will apply to shipments originating from:

●    Northwest India and Pakistan

●    South and East India

●    Bangladesh

●    Sri Lanka

●    Maldives

Effective Dates

The new surcharge will be implemented in two phases:

●    Effective 25 July 2026: Applicable to cargo destined for the West Coast of South America, the Caribbean, and Central America, excluding Puerto Rico and Colombia.

●    Effective 4 August 2026: Applicable to shipments destined for Puerto Rico and Colombia.

Surcharge of Up to US$4,550 per Container

The ECS will range from US$2,650 to US$4,550 per container, depending on the shipment's origin and the type of equipment used.

According to Maersk, the surcharge applies to most container types, including:

●    Dry Containers (DC)

●    Reefer Containers (RF)

●    Out-of-Gauge (OOG) Containers

●    Shipper-Owned Containers (SOC)

●    Non-Operating Reefer (NOR) Containers

Subject to Local Regulatory Requirements

Maersk noted that implementation of the revised ECS remains subject to applicable local regulations in each market, including any required regulatory approvals and mandatory notice periods where applicable.
