MSC Invests USD 1.4 Billion to Acquire a 49% Stake in Adani's Vizhinjam Transshipment Port

MSC continues to strengthen its presence in India's container market through another major investment in port infrastructure. Under the agreement, Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) - MSC's global port operating subsidiary - will acquire a 49% equity stake in Adani Ports' Vizhinjam Transshipment Port for approximately USD 1.4 billion.

Largest Foreign Private Investment in India's Port Infrastructure

The transaction values the entire Vizhinjam Port project in the state of Kerala at approximately USD 2.85 billion. According to industry analysts, this is the largest foreign private investment ever made in India's port infrastructure sector.

Upon completion of the transaction, Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) will retain a 51% ownership stake, maintaining management control while continuing to consolidate Adani Vizhinjam Port Private Limited as a subsidiary. The agreement remains subject to the necessary regulatory approvals.

Investment to Be Deployed in Two Phases

MSC will make the investment through TiL in two stages:

●    Phase 1: TiL will pay USD 539 million to acquire the initial equity stake.

●    Phase 2: TiL will invest an additional USD 858 million to finance the port's expansion program, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.

Vizhinjam Poised to Become a Major Regional Transshipment Hub

Officially commencing operations in December 2024, Vizhinjam is India's first dedicated deep-water transshipment port. Owing to its strategic location along major international shipping routes, the port has rapidly emerged as one of the country's fastest-growing container transshipment hubs.

The port currently has an annual handling capacity of 1.6 million TEUs. Upon completion of the expansion project, its designed capacity is expected to increase to 5.7 million TEUs per year.

MSC Deepens Strategic Partnership with Adani Ports

Beyond reinforcing MSC's strategy of expanding its global port portfolio, the transaction also marks another milestone in the partnership between the world's largest container shipping company and Adani Ports.

This will be the third joint venture between the two groups, following their collaborations on container terminals at Mundra and Ennore, further strengthening MSC's footprint across India's strategic port network.
